Profit with Purpose: Insights from TDG's Growth

I recently sat down with Josette Mandela on The Empowered Money Girl for an episode called Design Your Financial Freedom: On Building a Multi-Location Firm. The conversation stayed with me. It made me think about money, leadership, and what it really takes to build something that lasts.

A big part of how I lead comes from how I grew up around money. In my home, it was simple. If we didn’t have it, we didn’t have it. There was no pretending and no stretching for appearances. That mindset shaped me, and it’s one reason I’ve always been cautious about growing organically. I’ve never wanted to build a business that looks successful from the outside but feels unstable behind the scenes. Organic growth forces discipline. It forces you to earn the next step.

And even when talking about finances, it still comes back to purpose. I believe profit and purpose can sit in the same room. Design impacts how people live, connect, heal, and age, and that responsibility has always mattered to me. Building something meaningful doesn’t mean moving fast. It means building well. It’s the same mindset we bring to our work at The Designers Group. We design for longevity and real day-to-day experience. That means thinking through operations, durability, and the flow of the space, not just the big design moments.

As I continue growing TDG across multiple locations, these principles remain my compass. Organic growth. Financial clarity. Purpose-driven design.

This journey isn’t about reaching a destination. It’s about building something that makes a difference and reflects the values I’ve held since childhood. It’s about designing not just beautiful spaces, but a business and a life aligned with what truly matters.

If you’re interested in hearing more, I invite you to listen to the full conversation with Josette on The Empowered Money Girl. I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do purpose and profit show up in your work?
